This programme takes a hands-on and direct approach to providing you with the skills needed to start a career in audio and music technology. All tutors are industry professionals who bring a vast amount of real-world experience to the programme. The diploma has a major focus on practical projects, within our studios and collaboratively with students from our Film, Game and Animation programmes. Additionally, students may be invited to participate in commercial sessions in Windmill Lane Recording Studios.

Course Content

Professional Development for Music and Sound Industries

This unit develops learners’ knowledge of employment roles, regulation and professional development within music and sound industries. In this unit learners will investigate freelance roles within the industry, continuous professional development and the legal and regulatory frameworks in which the industry operates.

Multitrack Recording and Mixing

The aim of this unit is to give learners a good preparatory understanding of the standards required to prepare and complete an original recording that can be used as a demo disc or included within a promotional portfolio.

Audio Connectivity and Interface Techniques

This unit develops learner’s knowledge of the connection of signals and signal paths, both digital and analogue, and the factors that affect signal quality.

Audio Mix and Automation & Control Surfaces

The aim of this unit is to enable learners to develop skills in mixing and production techniques, which involve significant amounts of automation creatively to achieve specified results.

Stereo Microphone Techniques

This unit introduces the learner to the recording of non-amplified acoustic performances using stereo microphone techniques in a suitable performance space.

Composition Skills for Music and Sound Industries

In this unit, learners will be asked to evaluate the different areas key to creating original compositions with an emphasis on using music technology processes and instrumentation. Production features are examined as a compositional tool within the overall category of instrumentation.

Further Progression

Students who complete this course will be eligible to interview for our Level 8 BA (Hons) Degree in Audio and Music Technology and/or to work in a variety of entry-level roles within the audio and music industries. The programme is designed for all ages and skill levels, whether you are new to the industry, looking to up-skill, or wanting to learn new skills and enhance your career options within the audio and music industries. No industry experience is required and applicants may be accepted without formal academic qualifications.

General Course Requirements

  • To have a proven interest in audio and sound engineering, and an interest in related creative media arts
  • Basic knowledge of computers (Mac/PC, and audio software): helpful but not essential
  • A willingness to explore new ideas is important alongside a positive attitude towards this creative field of study

International Student Living Abroad or in Ireland

For applications whose first language is not English you will be asked for an original or certified true copy of one of the following:

  • TOEFL Paper based 570 with a TWE (test of written English) score of 4.5.
  • Computer based 233 with a score of 4.5 in the essay.
  • Internet based 90 with a written score of 21.
  • Cambridge Proficiency Grade C.
  • Cambridge Advanced Grade A.
  • IELTS Academic Version 6.5 with no individual band below 6.

Note: Students who do not satisfy Pulse College’s English language requirements for direct entry will be required to take an English language preparatory course before commencing studies. While the College does not offer an English language preparatory course, you will find this information from the Department of Education and Science’s official listing of recognised language schools.
