COURSE CONTENT

Studying at Pulse College will introduce you to valuable professional workflows and teach you everything from the basics of animation through to full 3D modelling. With the significant benefit of hands-on experience, you will be taught beyond the standard levels required by academic institutions. This practical experience is an essential element of our unique programme.

This course covers the full range of topics from preproduction, production, and postproduction in 2D and 3D animation, as well as the theory behind animation to create an in-depth understanding of the work you do.

John O’Brien

John O’Brien has worked as a level designer and later as team lead at Fierce Fun Games. John currently works as a freelance 3D artist. After achieving both a Bachelors and Masters degree in Game Design and Development, John moved into lecturing and has been a lecturer for the past four years. John teaches 3D modelling for characters and environments, texturing, and animating.

Eoghan Cowan

Eoghan Cowan has been working as a Concept Artist and Illustrator in the games industry for a number of years. He has worked with Clients such as Ubisoft, Square Enix, Fantasy Flight Games and Romero Games. After studying animation where he received full distinctions he went straight into one of the UKs leading AAA video game concept art outsourcing studios, Leading Light Conceptual Design. He has worked in-house in a number of studios and as a Freelance Concept artist with numerous clients around the world.

Patrick O’Callaghan
Michael O’Callaghan
Patrick O’Callaghan

Patrick is a BA (Hons) of the Irish School of Animation with nearly ten years of professional experience both in-studio and as a freelancer; he has worked as a Character Animator and Storyboard Artist on several TV shows as well as doing Character and Concept Design for both TV and Film. He has also directed IP development while holding the role of Art Director for Treehouse Republic Ltd, directed animated shorts for festivals and worked on Motion Graphics for TV and Corporate clients; lately he is co-developing his own startup ‘Space Duck Games’. Alongside this, Patrick also regularly teaches courses on both Animation and Storyboarding.

Michael O’Callaghan

Michael is an experienced 3D artist having worked on a number of successful animated TV shows including “Doc McStufins” and “Henry Hugglemonster” for Disney and “Octonauts”, “Danger Mouse” and “Go Jetters” for the BBC as well as a couple of short films, apps and other projects. Through his work he has earned a wealth of professional experience in a diverse number of roles, such as modelling, texturing, lighting, rigging, animation and 3D visual effects. Michael still works actively within the industry and is currently involved in projects with StoryToys ltd. in Dublin. Through his work in animation Michael has become proficient in several different industry standard software tools such as 3Ds Max, Maya and ZBrush. Michael is very passionate about film, animation and computer games having previously earned an MA in Computer Games Art. Michael currently teaches at Pulse College on our part time animation course on various 3D modules.

General Course Requirements

  • A proven interest in Art and/or Animation techniques and to display some interest in related creative media arts
  • Basic knowledge of computers (Mac/PC, and audio software): helpful but not essential

Further Progression

In line with national policy, graduates from the level 7 programme would be eligible to progress to postgraduate programmes at level 8.

Graduates may wish to further extend their industry-based professional qualifications as new technologies and developments emerge.

There is no portfolio requirement to enrol on this course.

Entry onto our Degree Programme is based upon a course interview and achieving a minimum of: 5x O6/H7s (O6 = 40 – 55% in a Leaving Certificate Ordinary subject / H7 = 30-40% in a Leaving Certificate Higher Level subject)

Students over the age of 23 years of age on 1st January of the year of the course is classified as a Mature Student.Mature applicants are advised to apply directly through the college using the ‘Apply now’ button below. Applicants will be asked for a detailed CV. Applications should be made before the 31st August the year of the course.

International Student living abroad or in Ireland

International Students below the age of 23 years of age will be required to submit High School Diploma Scripts and any additional Education Certifications.For applications whose first language is not English you will be asked for an original or certified true copy of one of the following:

– TOEFL Paper based 570 with a TWE (test of written English) score of 4.5.
– Computer based 233 with a score of 4.5 in the essay.
– Internet based 90 with a written score of 21.

How long will the interview be?

The interview will be typically 20–30 minutes long.

What should I bring?

If you could please bring:
– A copy of your C.V. that includes results of any music exams / tests you have completed to date. It should also include details of any groups / associations you have been a member of. It should also list your hobbies / interests
– It is a definite advantage to demonstrate your passion for animation, i.e. art portfolio or sketchbook, 3D modelling, design skills or making animation at home, although this is not a necessity
– A copy of your passport/drivers licence
– A copy of any previous education transcripts and certificates
