This intensive 5 Day Introductory Course explores the basics of Sound Engineering, Music Production & Music Technology. The course equips students with an understanding of what is required to produce high-quality tracks. Classes taking place in the world-class facilities of Windmill Lane Recording Studios, in Dublin’s Docklands.

COURSE CONTENT

Day 1


  • Getting Started & Your First Beat
  • Understanding the DAW & Workflow (tracks, browser, timeline, transport)
  • Audio vs MIDI vs loops
  • Building a drum groove (step-by-step)
  • Add percussion/loops
  • Adjust tempo and groove

Day 2


  • MIDI, Instruments & developing a song
  • MIDI basics (piano roll, quantise, velocity)
  • Using software instruments
  • Sound selection and layering
  • Layer a lead or hook
  • Create a 16-bar loop

Day 3


  • Recording Audio
  • Microphones & Recording Basics
  • Mic types and placement
  • Project: — Record Something Real in the studio
  • Recording Vocals & Guitar
  • Editing

Day 4


  • Arrangement & Creative Production
  • Turning a Loop into a Track
  • Song structure (intro, verse, chorus/drop, outro)
  • Harmonic development (introducing pads, harmonies etc.)
  • Transitions (filters, risers, mutes, impacts)
  • Automation (volume, filter sweeps)
  • Adding structure and dynamics

Day 5


  • Mixing, Exporting & Sharing
  • Mixing
  • EQ
  • Compression (simple control)
  • Reverb & delay for depth
  • Panning for space
  • Group listening session

HOW TO APPLY

Admissions

Prospective students should be over 16 years of age and display an enthusiasm for music and sound, and a desire to take music ideas from initial concept to finished product. There are no minimum academic requirements for acceptance onto this course.

This programme will be delivered in a blended format. As such, there are technical requirements for the online learning component (computer or tablet, broadband).
