Student Interview: Paloma Marcal – Audio & Music Technology

1. What’s your name and what course are you studying?

My name is Paloma Marcal and I’m doing the BA (Hons) in Audio & Music Technology.

2. Why did you choose to study at Pulse College?

After doing deep research around all music and multimedia courses in Dublin, I realized that this course was the one that better translated my interest in the field. Also, the college demonstrated reputable and renowned expertise in the educational business.

3. What are you enjoying most about your time at Pulse College?

Production techniques, recording studio workflow and industry concepts.

4. What kind of things do you learn that prepare you for the industry?

Technical skillsets, professional acumen and familiarity with industry-standard technologies.

5. What are the most challenging aspects of the course?

For me particularly, I’ve never studied anything related to it or worked in the industry before. Starting the course, I had no idea what it would be like, I just knew I wanted to study and possibly work with music production and live performance environments.

During the following years, I was fully immersed in many aspects of sound engineering including post-production for movies, sound for games, sound design, music theory and studio recording. Suddenly seeing how the big the picture is, especially starting from scratch can be a bit intimidating because it’s a very technical course. Keeping up-to-date with all this technology, as well as pushing the creative side was the most challenging aspect.

6. What would you say are the top requirements for someone looking to enter the industry?

Fastidious attention to detail, passion, creativity and an ever-learning mind-set.

7. What’s next for you?

I am looking to direct my ambitions towards involvement and eventually the creation and management of music and art events. Stage design which is what I feel most impassioned about. The next step would be to familiarise myself with other kinds of technology imperative in the live industry, regarding visual production and interactive media.
